Unpardonable Violence

More than 300 people, most of them children, are dead in Russia. Hostage taking and killing in schools must be condemned, no matter who is responsible.

THE news and pictures from North Ossetia were mesmerizing. Hundreds of bodies of children were scattered around in pools of blood, some of them with hideously burnt faces, others, almost naked children—still alive—running to save themselves. Meanwhile the sound of explosions and gunfire could be heard in the background.
