The Jayapura District Court acquitted a police officer accused of accepting bribes from illegal loggers. The judges should not be fixated by the lack of witnesses.

THE judges in a Papua court acquitted Commissioner Marthen Renouw of all charges. Away from his home province, like in Jakarta, Renouw, would be unknown. But in Papua, he is the untouchable policeman. Having been on the job for 29 years, he knows everyone, including the timber kings. It was this closeness that eventually led to his arrest and trial.
