MANY theses about Islamic boarding schools mention the five important elements in these "little kingdoms". The five are inseparable: the kiai (Islamic teachers), the students, the mosque, the school and the yellow book—so called because its loose pages are usually yellowed. If these theses were published as books, perhaps the authors should add the latest element in a chapter of its own: the kiai khos. It is unclear where this term came
