In the midst of expanding Syariah banking, MUI plans to issue a ruling declaring conventional bank interests to be haram. Why?

IN this nation, pros and cons over bank interest always cause a stir. In 2000, the Indonesian Ulemas Council (MUI) issued a fatwa (religious ruling) declaring interests in banks to be haram (forbidden) for Muslims. However, MUI explained that the ban on receiving bank interest was not unconditional, and the largest Muslim organizations, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and Muhammadiyah did not support the fatwa.
