When Parrots ‘Migrate’

Nearly 10,000 wild hook-billed parrots are smuggled out of Halmahera and Talaud Islands every year, destined for bird markets in the Philippines.

THOUSANDS of parrots and white cockatoos “migrate” annually from Halmahera, North Maluku, and Talaud, North Sulawesi, to the Philippines. They will never return. It is in fact not a seasonal migration of birds that can be seen through binoculars from the areas of Puncak, Bogor, West Java, when winter arrives.
