SINCE childhood, Maria Filiana, commonly called Mami Fili, has been used to watching women tearfully visiting her parents to complain about violence. Threats have become the daily menu of her family. As a woman living in the Timor region—the term she uses for eastern Indonesia—she is well aware of the discrimination against women’s role in society. Her only wish is to see women being appreciated for their views, being actively involved in s
