Kaukanao Revisited
Steeped in tragedy, the old coastal town was a government center in the early 1900s. Sadly, Kaukanao is becoming squalid and ruined. It’s slipping the minds of Timika City residents although the town possesses natural resources and fairly important historical objects in southern Papua, particularly those related to the history of Mimika regency.

THE water of Wania River, Hiripau village, Mimika, Papua, started rising that night in mid-January. The 1-meter-high makeshift wooden terminal above the surface of the water, was being inundated ankle-deep.
Luckily, it was a full moon so that people could be guided to watch their steps, avoiding the river water that began to rush with a strong silvery flow. The stream looked like a large serpent creeping under the moonlight.
