A Rare, Speckled Beauty
Researchers at LIPI, the Indonesian Institute of Sciences, discovered a new variety of orchid. A long verification and registration process is still required and the orchid’s natural habitat needs to be kept secret to ensure that it is not exploited to the point of extinction.

THE journey of dozens of LIPI researchers to the jungles of Borneo have finally born fruit. After having spent nearly half a month combing the 500 hectares of hills and jungles whose whereabouts are a secret, the researchers succeeded in collecting 243 species of plants of the Leguminosae family, palms, bamboos, ferns and orchids. Hundreds of plants which are considered rare species were then flown to the Purwodadi Botanical Gardens in East Java
