Information Over the Airwaves

In remote areas, radio is like the ‘lifeline’ of information. Villagers are actively involved in becoming announcers or suppliers of information.

AT 5am, the sky is still pitch-black. The mountain air in Anyelma village, Kurima district, Yahukimo, Papua, stings the skin. Kerry Wetipo, 26, walks through the morning mist. Traversing a 20-kilometer stretch of road from her home in the valley, Kerry heads for her office at Radio Pikon Ane. Upon arriving she turns on the transmitter, has some coffee, and rearranges the material that she prepared the night before for the 6am broadcast.
