Operation at The Peak
A medical team conducted free cataract operations for five days last June, at the Mulia District of Puncak Jaya in Papua province. Collaborating with the Indonesian Red Cross and the International Committee for the Red Cross, the team attended to villagers around the highlands. They were so enthusiastic a few feigned blindness so they could be operated on. This health mission at Puncak Jaya led to other touching humanitarian stories. Nickmatulhuda, a Jakarta-based photojournalist sent an exclusive report of the operation to Tempo English Edition.

OPHTHALMOLOGIST Dr Esma Kindangen already examined dozens of patients at the Mulia General Hospital, Mulia, Puncak Jaya district, when an elderly lady, around 60, sat patiently in front of her. With a special flashlight and a magnifier mounted in front of her eyes, Esma performed an eye check once more. “Open your eyes, mama,” she said.
