Flores’ Hidden Jewel
In the middle of Flores Island lies the Regency of Ngada—like a beautiful maiden waiting to be courted. Some may see it as the most backward area in East Nusa Tenggara province, yet it boasts fertile lands, breathtakingly beautiful panorama and a megalithic culture waiting to be discovered by researchers. Unfortunately, the promise of development remains untouched. Poor infrastructure and an annually castrated budget are the challenges Ngada faces in its attempt to move forward. THE pier at the Seventeen Islands National in Riung, Ngada, Central Flores, was quiet and cold—covered by misty, foggy air. But several journalists—Tempo English Edition included—seemed to enjoy their stroll there. “You have to go early in the morning if you want to see the underwater life. Otherwise the wind will muddle the water,” said Muammar, a local resident.
