Catholic missionaries laid the tradition of Asmat as a ‘foundation’ when they built a church in Agats. The enculturation has proven successful in bringing residents closer to religion.

JESUS is black. He is laid bare, with no shred of cloth normally covering the waist. Both his arms are hanging instead of being outstretched and nailed as they are generally portrayed, but the two hands bear holes. The figure of the wooden statue is not proportional, yet it clearly represents a skinny body. His head, bigger than the trunk, turns to the right. His crown of thorns is not fixed on the head but it floats several centimeters away.
