Jongaya A Safe Haven
The Health Ministry named 2011 as Leprosy Prevention Year. Indonesia, India and Brazil are countries with the largest population of new leprosy cases. In Indonesia, about 14 provinces and districts have yet to eradicate this debilitating disease and South Sulawesi sets the record with one of the largest numbers of leprosy cases. Not surprisingly, the Jongaya leprosy center, which provides safe and stress-free treatment, is located in Makassar. From here, patients work and do business openly, without restraint, unashamed to get out of their homes. How have they managed to overcome their stigma? Tempo English Edition’s correspondent reports from Jongaya in South Sulawesi.

PAVING blocks dominate the entrance to the complex and the alleys of this settlement. Its buildings are mostly permanent homes—partly renovated with zinc roofs and tiles. There are almost no old structures apart from an idle church. The environment of the complex is elegantly arranged. Shady and robust trees are standing on several spots.
