Neglected Mota’ain Market
Despite the heavy human traffic along theborder between Mota’ain, East Nusa Tenggara and Atapupu, Timor Leste, the Mota’ain border market appears deserted. The locals lack capital to start businesses.

THE 5 x 7-meter market buildings look derelict. The yard is filled with overgrowth of grass. Goats and pigs roll and graze around the 2-meter-high wire fences protecting the 24 shops standing in a U-shaped line. Several residents are seen sitting leisurely around, playing chess. Also seen in front of the building are several housewives busy with a variety of chores such as washing, hanging their laundry on the clothesline or even cooking.
