Saving the Last Mangrove

Fishermen in the region of Teluk Tomini, Gorontalo, are active replanting mangroves which in the past they often cut down. Fish are abundant, the coast is free from abrasion, and incomes are rising.

THE elongated boat slowly pulled away from Torisiaje Laut village, Popayato subdistrict, Pohuwato district, Gorontalo. Umar Pasandre, 35, sat in the very front of the small motorized boat. With a sweep of his hand he pointed out the stretch along the coast in which 3,000 mangrove seedlings had just been planted. The noise from the motor competed with Umar’s voice as he explained the damage to the mangroves in this region.
