Abon Tuna, Made in Cambaya

Housewives in Cambaya subdistrict, Ujung Tanah district, Makassar, have changed their chatting habit into a productive enterprise: producing abon ikan, seasoned and fried shredded fish.

AFTER finishing their household chores at about 10am, housewives in the subdistrict of Cambaya, Ujung Tanah district, walk along narrow alleys in a dense population settlement, to reach an integrated service center (Posyandu). They are not going there for children’s immunization or health checks. They are there to produce a fish side dish—abon ikan. This has been a routine of the women living near Paotere Port since 2009.
