Eastern Promise
On August 31, the Ramon Magsayasay Foundation will be awarding a number of exemplary people from around Asia, in recognition of their integrity and their extraordinary work to help out their fellow men and improve their environment. One of the recipients of the 2011 Magsasay Award will be Hasanain Juaini, a native son of eastern Indonesia. He is known to advocate gender equality, religious harmony and environmental conservation through his Islamic boarding school in West Lombok. Along with Juaini is the 1983 winner of the Magsasay Award, Anton Sudjarwo, whose foundation Dian Desa has been working in impoverished areas of eastern Indonesia for the past three decades. Then there is Muhammad Idris, Bone-Bone village chief in South Sulawesi who managed to rid his community of cigarette smoking.
