The Batak opera was formed in the 1920s. Warmly welcomed at the height of its popularity, the performers fell into poverty when it lost its popularity.

Performers of traditional Indonesian instrumentssarune (similar to a clarinet), kecapi (a plucked zither) and taganing (a set of hand drums) made music at the Indonesia Christian University (UKI) in Jakarta. They were the accompaniment for the Batak opera performance Woman at the Edge of the Lake. The traditional music, seldom heard these days, was the work of Alister Nainggolan, a living legend of the Batak opera, and his children.
