The Sun of Pontianak

A young writer from Pontianak has stimulated an interest in reading through the founding of his own publishing house. To promote his titles, he travels to schools all over West Kalimantan.

For most Indonesians, the book Sepok would be difficult reading. The story, which chronicles a journey to Bulgaria, is written in a mixture of Indonesian and a West Kalimantan dialect. That said, Amrin Zuraidi Rawansyah, a 36-year-old resident of Pontianak, capital of West Kalimantan, thoroughly enjoyed it. "The narrative is honest and the story is funny. And the language is similar to my own. It's my favorite book," he said.
