Teen Researchers in Action

Near the cafeteria at State High School (SMAN) 3 in Denpasar, Bali, is a room full of thousands of students' research projects. Some of the work is displayed on tables, such as paperboard made from green algae (spirogyra), sound-absorbing concrete blocks with bamboo leaves, and plastic-like material composed of cassava. I Gede Dalem Elang Erlangga, 18, accompanied Tempo around the school three weeks ago and proudly showed off his work. "I won the Geography Olympiad of the Environment Ministry in 2013 for this one," he said of the algae paperboard.

Elang led the way to an adjacent room. There was a small library of reference books and student papers and a table of microscopes, ovens and scales. Nearby was a 10-person meeting room, complete with a video projector for giving presentations. The facilities resembled those found in university labs or professional research institutions. This is the Trisma Students Research Center at SMAN 3 Denpasar, created in February 2012.
