Guardians of Lake Toba
THE 10-hectare plot of land in Huta Ginjing village, North Sumatra, once bone-dry, is now awash with luxuriant green trees. Located on the banks of Lake Toba, the area has been planted with avocado, mango, jengkol (Pithecellobium jiringa), petai (Parkia speciosa) and durian trees. Timber-producing trees like mahogany, meranti (Shorea spp) and sengon (Albizia chinensis) have also been planted.
The woodlands, which sit about 120 meters above sea level, have an important functionto heal Lake Toba, the largest lake in Asia.
