School To Maintain Old Values

Children of the Punan Semeriot Tribe in North Kalimantan had no access to formal education because of their village’s secluded location. A young returnee initiated an indigenous school.

SRI Tiawati is used to traveling six hours on a small boat-known as ketinting by locals-from a port in Tarakan, the largest city in North Kalimantan, to Ujang village, where the indigenous tribe of Punan Semeriot lives.

In the village, the 24-year-old supervises an informal school for local children with no prior access to education. Sri founded the school in December 2015. Ujang village is located in a remote area lacking such basic infrastruct
