Two middle-aged men chatted casually on the ground floor of a five-story apartment building in the Jemundo village, Sidoarjo, East Java. The two traded stories for hours over hot coffee and two packs of cigarettes.

Bunidin, one of the two, says they would always chat on their days off work. "We're bored living here," said the 43-year-old, "We're like birds who are have alighted in someone else's hometown."
