The Climb to Equality

Members of the Diffabled Movement for Equality in Makassar, South Sulawesi, are fighting the stigma they face. One of their activities are mountain climbing.

Despite Abdul Rahman’s loss of vision, he and a group of others climbed Mount Sesean in North Toraja, December 1-3. Rahman was born with normal eyesight, but his vision began to steadily deteriorate when he was 12. Today, the 31-year-old only has 30 percent of his eyesight remaining. But Rahman’s aim in joining the climbing expedition was not to show off or to "conquer nature."
