Jail or Payback?

A review court has ruled Suharto’s case can indeed be reopened. To compensate state losses, an in absentia trial may even be held.

Recent headline-hogging news about fugitive Tommy Suharto have almost made people forget his father, ex-president Suharto, and his dramatic court case. It turns out though, that the case hasn’t been shelved yet. On Wednesday last week, the Jakarta High Court ordered the case—he was charged with corrupting funds belonging to seven foundations—reopened.

The ruling was made by a panel of appeal judges led by I Gde Soedharta—
