Hardis Eyes

A suspect in the Timika case is slowly turning blind and deaf in jail as a result of hepatitis and tuberculosis. The appeal for special treatment has gone unanswered.

THIRTY-four-year-old Hardi Tsugumol, a suspect in the Timika case is left to lie in his cell. I am paralyzed, he said weakly. In January 2006 when he was first imprisoned in the Jakarta Police Headquarters jail with seven other accomplices, he was still in good physical health. The group faced murder charges for the killing of American and Indonesian citizens at mile 62-63 Timika, Papua, in August 2002.
