Out of Touch

Some church members believe the Surabaya diocese is losing its link with the common people by building expensive development projects. The controversy has already cost one priest his job.

It was early in the morning on October 1 and 40-year-old Father Kurdo Irianto was looking for a city bus at Bungurasih terminal, Surabaya. Sporting a dark jacket, dark sandals and lugging his laptop computer, the Roman Catholic priest from Rembang, Central Java, was heading out of town to hold a pastoral service at the invitation of some lay members of the church. Everyone, bus drivers and street vendors alike, greeted him as he walked past.
