Fast-growing Sengon from Cibinong
LIPI has succeeded in developing the first transgenic sengon in the world. It is suitable for use by the paper industry, as a construction material, and an alternative fuel.

THE temperature in a greenhouse room of the Biotechnology Research Center's Limited Testing Facility, Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), Cibinong, West Java, is constantly 30 degrees Celsius. The room half the size of a badminton court is filled with dozens of plants with straight stems and shield-like leaves. Their heights vary from 1 to 3 meters. Each of them receives special treatment.
