Decentralization can come in many different shapes and forms. But they all have one thing in common: Through respecting diversity, they strengthen the nation.

As a delegation of political and administrative power, decentralization can take the form of federalism or regional autonomy. It can apply to the entire country or only to particular areas, such as Zanzibar in Tanzania or Hong Kong and Macau in China. Both in federal and unitary states, the central government may possess special jurisdiction over particular areas, for example, reservations for Indian tribes in the USA and Canada.
