AFTER the Indonesian people proclaimed independence in 1945, the people everywhere spontaneously established their own army. This army was intended to protect the state of the Republic of Indonesia, a state created out of a popular struggle. The army would defend independence and people’s sovereignty, mentally and physically. It had a popular spirit and was of a popular design.
