HATUN was shot dead near a bus stop. She was only 23. On a bitterly cold day, the first Monday in February 2005, she collapsed, riddled with bullet holes in her head and chest, killed by a pistol fired at close range.

The Berlin police later arrested three men of Kurdish-Turkish descent. They were accused of conspiracy to murder. They were all brothers, and relatively young, aged 25, 24 and 18. The youngest was named Ayhan Surucu. It was he who fi
