Takdir

In 1935, a young 27-year-old Indonesian poet spoke in the name of his generation when he wrote a poem that later became famous, Heading for the Sea, (here in Teeuw’s English translation):

Tempo

October 2, 2018

We have left you behind,

Lake, tranquil without a ripple

Sheltered by wooded mountains

From wind and hurricane.

For once we are awakened

From a pleasant dream:...

 

From that time on our souls are restless

Once they have striven they can no longer rest

The former tranquility palls

The sheltering mountain appears now as an obstacle

The heart revolts and wants to be free

Attacking everything that bars the way.
