Becoming a ‘Vampire’ in Alor

IT is pitch black in Alor, East Nusa Tenggara. There is no electricity here. It is here in the dark of night that Taniawati Supali and her team works. They visit the homes of residents. One by one, the residents extend their arms. The tips of their fingers are stuck with needles. Then 20 milliliters of their blood is drawn with special collection syringes. The empty vials are filled with blood.

Taniawati is clearly not a vampire. She is a doctor
