Lost Lakes

The Peta Hijau community created a green map of lakes in Jakarta as a reminder of their importance for city conservation. Six lakes have disappeared already.

ITS water is thick and blackened; along its banks are piles of plastic garbage, vegetable leftovers, and food remnants. These piles of rubbish protrude into the lake, reducing its surface width by 5 meters. In a glimpse, this Ria Rio Lake looks like a giant waste containment pool. There is nothing wonderful with the smell either. Foul stench fills the air, presenting a great pain for the nose.
