The Children's Political Education
Wahid Hasyim taught his children democracy from a young age. They were free to choose their schools as well as political leanings.

ONE by one, the kids stood on a chair by the window, climbed on to a nearby mango tree, and from there, stepped on to the roof of a neighbor's house, slowly sneaking out of their home on Jalan Jawa. The children-Abdurrahman, Aisyah, Salahuddin, Umar-then strolled leisurely towards Taman Suropati park in Menteng. Their friends were waiting there.
