Uncle, Mentor

THE spacious home of Miyono Suryo Sarjono, 72, stands just half a kilometer west of Tirtonadi Terminal in Solo, Central Java. With a large yard and a 2-meter-high fence, the house sits on the left side of the road that goes from Solo to Yogyakarta. A campaign banner for Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo, now running for president, hangs on the enclosure. One could hardly expect otherwise: this is Joko's uncle's house.

On Saturday three weeks ago, a stream of people arrived at the house. Some were Joko's friends and acquaintances, while others were from his extended family. They came to pick up campaign T-shirts, check on Joko's agenda and more. Jokowi, as he is known, had arrived in Solo the previous night as part of a tour through West and Central Java. Jokowi's mother, Sujiatmi Notomiharjo, was also at the house. Miyono warmly greeted his guests.
