THE failure of a business venture in Solo did not diminish Abdullah Makhmud Hendropriyono's opinion of Joko Widodo. Far from being disillusioned, Hendro, the former head of the State Intelligence Agency (BIN), was struck by Jokowi's outlook a decade ago. At the time, Jokowi, as he is known-then mayor of Solo-knocked back Hendro's property investment proposal.
"He said, 'Sorry, it's not possible'," Hendro recounted at the offices of Andalusia Antar Benua in Tebet, South Jakarta, on Thursday two weeks ago. Hendro was deemed to have not satisfied the required conditions. He returned to Jakarta empty-handed.
