With no summer during the entire year, it was the worst ever time for the farmer. Seeking better fortune, Smithwith wife and childrendecided to leave Vermont, setting out for Palmyra, New York.
In 1816, North America was plagued by unpredictible weather cycles. Snow fell in the summer months. Many living on the US east coast decided to move farther west, to places like Indiana or Illinois, where less volatile weather promised better luck.
