From Rotterdam to Bandung

Four months ago, Daliana Suryawinata took a major step in her life: moving back to Indonesia. "The ambience here is amazing. Many young people are thinking about the future of Indonesia," said 36-year-old Daliana, an architect who lived in Rotterdam, the Netherlands for almost 12 years. "So, it would be unfortunate if this momentum is missed and we do not go home and get involved."

Daliana, a recipient of three grants from Stimuleingsfonds voor Architectuur in the Netherlands, decided to leave the convenience she had enjoyed in Rotterdam. As an architect living and working in that country, she was able to get subsidies for her public projects anywhere, from a program called the creative industry fund. "This applies even if the project, for example, is in Indonesia," said Daliana, an urban architect who got her first degree from Tarumanegara University and her masters from the Berlage Institute in Rotterdam.
