The Two Faces of a Journalist
THE old colonial-style building appears glum with its yellowing paint peeling here and there and its ceramic floors and window panes practically crumbling. The two-story structure on Jalan Pahlawan No. 114, Surabaya, built in 1930, was where Sutomo built his career as a journalist from 1942 to 1945.
The cultural heritage building once housed the office of Domei, Japan's news agency. From Surabaya, Bung Tomo was tasked with distributing news to all of Domei's representative offices in Indonesia. Reports were distributed through cable messages by dispatchers who were then called markonis.
