Four years have passed since the implementation of the moratorium on new autonomous regions, and there are no signs it will be lifted. President Joko Widodo plans to continue with the policy of the previous administration, despite strident calls for its lifting all of last year. The calls come from varied sources, from non-governmental organizations (NGOs), local politicians, members of the House of Representatives (DPR) to members of the Regional Houses of Representatives (DPD).

Vice President Jusuf Kalla recently responded to those demands by saying that the government would consider the possibility if the local governments proved they could operate efficiently. "The condition is if economic growth (in their areas) has reached seven percent," said Kalla at the opening of the Regional Autonomy Institute in Jakarta on April 26.
