A Warrior on and off the field

Chairil Anwar did not write poems just from his imagination. Being at the center of the revolution, he had a firsthand look at the mayhem.

A picture in the fading golden frame stood on top of a black loudspeaker in one of the rooms at the H.B. Jassin Literary Documentation Center, Jakarta. Set against the wall, the frame was around two meters away from a photo of H.B. Jassin wearing batik. In the frame, placed on the cream-colored stone, was Chairul Anwars hand-written poem Persetujuan dengan Bung Karno (A Deal with Bung Karno).

There is also a small, tilted photo of Chairil smoking
