The Premonition

Soe Hok Gie died from inhaling toxic fumes from the volcanic crater of Mount Semeru, just a few hours before his 27th birthday. His ashes were scattered over the Mandalawangi Valley at the foothills of Mount Pangrango in West Java.

THE morning chill on Mount Semeru's slope failed to improve Soe Hok Gie's irritation at Aristides Katoppo. All through the night of December 14, 1969, Aristides was talking in his sleep so much that Hok Gie himself was unable to rest. "You were so restless.
