Preventing Smuggled TVs

The electronic goods market continues to grow—but smuggling is still the main threat.

THE man opens the plastic wrap of the small radio with ease. Behind him, rows of televisions of various sizes are displayed proudly. Dust fills the air when Herry Sutanto, the electronics store owner in the Glodok area, West Jakarta, touches the shelf by accident.

That is the condition that he has felt for the past year. Although prices are relatively stable, his goods are not easily sold. Before the elections, there were practically no buyers.
