The Madiun Affair
Three years after independence, when the Republic of Indonesia (RI) was confronting the first military aggression by the Dutch, the Madiun Affair blew up on September 18, 1948. The Indonesian Communist Party (PKI) and People's Democracy Front controlled Madiun, East Java, and were using it as their base. The PKI, under the leadership of Muso and Amir Sjarifuddin, set up the "Soviet Republic of Indonesia".
