After having to cede half of its territory in 1755 to Prince Mangkubumi (who later became Sultan Hamengku Buwono I of Yogyakarta), the Surakarta court under Paku Buwana III had to suffer yet another blow when parts of the kingdom had to be carved up for the king’s rebellious cousin, Raden Mas Said or Prince Sambernyawa. The 1757 Treaty of Salatiga gave birth to the court of Mangkunegara, with Raden Mas Said taking the title of Mangkunegara
