RESIDENTS work together to drain the spring and catch catfish during the Sadranan Makam tradition at Sendang Pucung Gede, Semarang, Central Java, Friday, March 1. The annual event, involving the sacrifice of 135 chickens and the draining and cleaning of the spring, is carried out every year on Friday Pahing (a day in the Javanese calendar) as a symbol of self-purification before welcoming the Ramadan Islamic fasting month holy, while also preserving ancestral culture.
