AN aerial photo shows volcanic ash rising from the crater of Mount Semeru in Supiturang village, Lumajang, East Java, Thursday, October 17, 2024. According to data from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), during the observation period on Wednesday, October 16, from 00:00 to 24:00 local time, Mount Semeru experienced 16 observed volcanic eruptions with ash plumes reaching heights of 300 to 800 meters, white to gray in color. One observed avalanche traveled a distance of 1,500 meters toward Besuk Kobokan, while there were 55 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 10 to 22 mm lasting 50-177 seconds, and 13 avalanche quakes with amplitudes of 3 to 12 mm lasting 45 to 136 seconds.
