Lippo Group boss James Tjahaja Riady has been forced to fork out US$10,000 (around Rp95 million at exchange rate of Rp9,500) over the past few weeks. The money was needed to pay a fine settled by the Justice Department in the United States in a case concerning $1 million donated by the Lippo Group to the Democratic Party to be used as campaign funds in the 1992 election. This figure is far above the maximum limit for private donations in the US:
