WHEN he was appointed as President Joko Widodo’s candidate running mate in August, Kiai Haji Ma’ruf Amin immediately stepped on the gas.
His targets were the areas where Jokowi lost out in the 2014 presidential elections, namely Banten, West Java, and Madura, East Java. The Jokowi-Jusuf Kalla pairing at the time did indeed win in East Java, scooping 53.1 percent of the vote, while their opponents, the Prabowo Subianto-Hatta Rajasa pairing only received 46.8 percent of the vote. But Jokowi-Kalla lost out big time in Madura.
